 Muslim Exchange Students Experience Alaska

By Liz Leslie
Posted December 2, 2010

This year is the first time Homer has had Muslim exchange
students since the YES program began in 2002.

Four Muslim foreign exchange students are living in Homer
Alaska, for the first time since the program began in 2002.

Youth Exchange Studies (YES) hosted students in Anchorage last year
In addition to Homer, Juneau also has students.

The students arrived in August during Ramadan.

Alaska’s latitude made fasting during difficult –  in August the days were 16 hours long.

All students come from Muslim-majority countries with vastly different climates than Alaska.

When asked about the most bizarre thing they’ve seen in Alaska, their answers varied some
but all agreed it was snow.
